Culturally Responsive Teaching and LeadingThe un/HUSH Framework and Illinois State Board of Education Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards

The un/HUSH Framework, created by Dr. Marlee Bunch, is a tool designed to help educators and leaders navigate and implement culturally responsive teaching and leading standards. This framework can be used to guide curriculum development, assess existing texts and lessons, and support leadership strategies. It serves as a valuable starting point for applying culturally responsive practices to curriculum, pedagogy and school culture.

By using the un/HUSH Framework, educators and leaders can incorporate multiple perspectives, ensuring students and families are represented through their diverse cultures, identities and lived experiences. It encourages users to move beyond surface-level inclusion toward meaningful engagement. Additionally, the framework supports the assessment and integration of the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards, along with broader principles of culturally responsive teaching and learning.

These standards are centered around:

  • Self-awareness and relationships to others
  • Students as individuals and co-creators
  • Leveraging student advocacy
  • Family and community collaboration
  • Content selection in all curricula
  • Student representation in the learning environment
